Quick steps, as in comparative, apropos unrapidity of testudinal Gene, (he does it on tortoise!) Kicks steps, as in “Get your ….. on A66!” Yes, yes! G knows it should be “Route 66!” it’s just that he currently enjoys his twoth dwell proximate to A66, (the oneth being in Barnard Castle from ‘66 to a few yonks more, at 66 Victoria Road), kicks entering ownership of G, if not actually on A66, then closely by, (e.g. Scotch Corner, Morritt Arms, Cockermouth School, Skiddaw etc.). said kicks involving all meanings of “scale”, except one, G having no interest whatsoever in matters piscatory! * See below!
Gene, as in comparative, apropos rapidity of delphinoid Diane, (she does it on porpoise!), swimmeth craply and would have made a rubbish duck. He’d have been a drake anyway, and one of the dabbling kind, the other kind of dabbling being a G strength, for dabble he did in Barney days, said
dabblement centring on "jogging", or so he thought, (see sooner). Later, (though aforementioned re desperate fitness bid, ski-ing for the sake of), jogging became dabble-free and seriously-taking G acquired a stop-watch, at which point arrives several points:
1, G can repay USA for borrowment of 66 with indication of correct pronunciation of “Route". 2. It’s not 66 anyway. It’s nearer Route 60.
3. In fact it’s Root 60. 4. Non-dabbling stop-watched joggers soon find they’re (perhaps) not. If their speed beats 10 mins per mile they’re runners.
.
1. The best ever run T-shirt...first palindromic Great North Run.
2. G's medal, Athens, where Marathons first ended.
Mins per mile for jogging/running G, (lotly more than 4, more like 7, or 8), led to the think, “must be more, or less 7, or 8 mph too,” which led to..... If x mph equals x mins per mile, (which is x hours per mile, or 60 mph), then, x=60 and x =60, i.e. x= 60.
60 x x
x is the square root of 60, (root 60), which is 7.7459666, near enough! 7¾ minutes per mile is the same speed as 7¾ mph, so, if G could run 10 miles in about 77 mins, or a half marathon in around 102 mins, he’d be a “Root 60” runner. In early '90’s that was just about right!
2
Six runs established around Barnard Castle together with Gene's quickest time for each.
1. East Loups's. From bridge over Scur Beck, (Bowes-Cotherstone road), to west end of East Loups's, (ruins), by the beck and return. 3 miles approx. 27-10-70, 26 min. approx.
2. Huggill Bridge-Citron Seat Circuit. From bridge over Hug Gill, (Bowes-Sleightholme road), to Citron Seat summit direct, summit wall west to wall junction, north with new wall, east of Seven Hills to road at gate, return by road. 3.3 miles approx. 28-10-70, 41.5 min. approx.
3. Goldsborough Circuit. From sharp bend in road above Pitcher House, (Baldersdale), over summits of Goldsborough and the highest 2 of Burners Hills, to the road at "skew" bridge near Hagworm Hall, return by road. 3 miles approx. 1-11-70, 29 min. approx.
4. Deepdale. From Trinity Methodist Church, Barnard Castle, to Deepdale Aqueduct, across Tees, along north bank of Deepdale Beck to The Great Stone and return. 2.38 miles approx.
9-11-70, 22 min. approx.
5.Railway Track-Percy Beck Circuit. From Trinity Methodist Church, Barnard Castle, to Deepdale Aqueduct, by Tees to viaduct, by disused track to Barnard Castle Station, down to Percy (Black) Beck, by beck to confluence with Tees, return to church. 2.38 miles approx.
16-11-70, 20.5 min. approx.
6. Eggleston Common. From B6278 through gate up bridleway just north of Blackton Beck, left at metal gate in ½ mile, by wall past reservoir on right, over summit of fell, down to B6278 where it becomes "unwalled", (near point 1168 ft. 356 m.). 2.19 miles approx.
1-6-71, 30 min. approx.
1. involves approx. 250 ft. ascent, 2. involves approx. 350 ft. ascent in deep heather,
3. involves approx.500 ft. ascent on moorland, 6. involves 650 ft. ascent on moorland.

G wore out all but (rejected, 'cos hurt!)
Actually 18 shoes, not 9, 'cos G had one for each foot, but Pseudo Preepeeks and Pub Crawl, (black panel), unrun by G, were overrun by D & Martin in training for "fun-runs" accompanying G when he went "off-grid", as in entering events like marathons and fractions thereof.
Running Partner, (required compatibility includes rapidity match), came G's way in '98, Root 60 Runner, D Dawes, of Holly Lodge, who has one more pair than Diane has....she is Dianne! Pretty obvious G's "Running Colours"...red, white & black, ridiculously exaggerated 9-6-91, (Funny Runner G)!

1. UNDER AND OVER 3.49 miles. A circuit defined by junctions of 3 roads: B5292, Strawberry How Lane, Hundith Hill to Wythop road, crossing A66 twice. Lorton Road Site of 2-site Cockermouth School was in Strawberry How Lane, so this run popular with teachers, who did it in numbers 27-6-86, as "Lemonaid". G's fastest, (clockwise), 9-11-90, 24m. 26s. contrasting with 34m. 14s. on Lemonaid Day, (cardboard lemon medals made by friend Jacinta Clark, a good runner herself). Run en masse again on 9-7-91 marking move to single site, (Castlegate Drive), G, (No. 13, but wearing 61's, vest) did 25m. 59s. and was named "Best Turned Out" by wee-removing judges! Both "official" runs anticlockwise.
2. TOP TRIP Croft Farm to Skiddaw summit. 9 "crow" miles, a bit more than 11 by best route G devised pre giving up attempts to better 2 h. 24-7-89, (25th Anniversary of G's 1st ascent), saw 2h. 5m. 33s. 6-8-89 2h. 3m. 38s. Biking the road, 7-8-91 G did 85m. 51s. See A W Way.
3. BIN BAG 2.4 miles approx. 550 ft. ascent. A circuit involving a traverse of The Binn, (Burntisland), based on 3 Fleming Way. G's fastest, (East to West), 20-8-92, 22m. 34s.
4. COCKERMOUTH THREE PEAKS 7 miles approx. 850 ft. ascent. A circuit over the summits of Slate Fell, Robin o' Crackett, (Golf Course), and The Hay. Frank Firby defined it, (based on Cockermouth School's Lorton Road Site), 3-4-90, G ran 64m. 01s.
5. HAY TIME A circuit of aprox. 4.8 miles, 585 ft. ascent. based on Cockermouth School's Castlegate Drive Site, visiting Watch Hill and Setmurthy Common. G did 42m. 36s. (clockwise), 17-7-91, equalling anticlockwise, 29-6-90.
6. BINSEY Croft Farm to Binsey summit. G..58m. 32s. & back sub 2h.10-6-90. See A W Way.
A W WAY..which you were instructed, (above), to "see" and PLUMBLAND CARNIVORE, which you weren't.
A Wainwright Way. A. Wainwright = Alfred Wainwright, (Guide-book writer). A "Wainwright" = Any one of 214 fells given a separate chapter in Wainwright's original seven books. A Wainwright Way = A route to the summit of a "Wainwright", (with return). Which "Wainwright"? The nearest, which depends on where you are. For Gene there are three Wainwright Ways.
A Wainwright Way (Number 1) Binsey is the nearest Wainwright to Croft Farm, the direct distance 5.1 miles. Best bet practical route, (to "Caermote Corner" by road, then direct to summit), 5.9 miles.
A Wainwright Way (Number 2) Ling Fell is the nearest Wainwright to Cockermouth School, Lorton Road Site, direct distance 3.2 miles. Best route, via St. Cuthbert's Church, Embleton and High Side, 3.7 miles.
A Wainwright Way (Number 3) Ling Fell is the nearest Wainwright to Cockermouth School, Castlegate Drive Site, direct distance 3.4 miles. Best route goes via Westray to join the above at St. Cuthbert's Church.
A Wainwright Way (Number 1)
G set up a triple double challenge; triple, (Croft Farm to Binsey summit by three modes), double, (return to Croft Farm by same mode).
1. On foot to summit under 1h. return under 2h.
2. Using a bicycle where possible, to summit under ¾h. return under 1½h.
3. With any assistance, (motor car), to summit under ½h. return under 1h.
G succeeded in all three;
1. 10-6-90 to summit 58m. 32s. return 50m. 40s. total 109m. 12s.
2. 6-8-91 to summit 40m. 55s. return 29m. 25s. total 70m. 20s.
3. 28-7-91 to summit 26m. 07s. return 17m. 46s. total 43m. 53s.
G set up a similar triple double challenge Croft Farm to Skiddaw summit allowing double the times for Binsey.
He failed twice to reach the summit in under 2 hours, (see Top Trip, above), and therefore did not run back to Croft Farm. The motorised assisted attempt never materialised, but G did succeed with a bike;
7-8-91 to summit 85m 51s. (under 1½h.) return 63m. 34s. total 149m. 25s. (under 3h.)
The Binsey and Skiddaw cycling trips were on consecutive days.
A Wainwright Way (Number 2)
G organised this for Cockermouth School staff on 22-5-90, with cakes and drinks afterwards on the lawn. These were provided by Diane, who intended to serve same, but had a last minute trip to Carlisle Infirmary instead. Martin had to ondergo a minor operation on his hand.
The 7 runners, (in finishing order), were: Gary Baum, Barry Hughes, Gene Robinson, Frank Firby, Peter Quirk, John Gibb,
Chris Castell.
Gary, who'd run it as a practice on 15-5-90, reached Ling Fell summit in 30m. 30s. and did 55m. overall for the round trip. Gene, who later ran it twice more, did his best time in the race; 36m. 56s. to the summit, 63m. 29s. overall.
A Wainwright Way (Number 3)
G had intended to organise this along similar lines to Number 2, but it never happened. One reason is that the route from the Castlegate Drive Site is less attractive, not the least reason for which is a precarious crossing of A66. Gene ran it 7 days before his last day of teaching pre retirement; 11-7-03 53m. 46s. to Ling Fell summit 94m. 11s. overall.
Plumbland Carnivore
G's name for the "mini marathon" that used to be run annually at Plumbland Carnival and Sports. It nowhere enters Plumbland and is a circuit on the Alphabet Grid, HIKABC, with an attached starting and finishing straight of 70 yards in a field between C and H. Plumbland Carnivore is therefore 2.14 miles. It was always run clockwise.
13-7-90 G ran 15m. 13s. and was 4th.
8-7-91 G ran 15m. 16s. DiaNe ran approx. 20m and won £2, (probably 2nd lady).
4-7-92 G ran 15m. 07s. his fastest.
3-7-93 G ran 15m. 26s. DiaNe ran approx. 20m, was first lady and carried home a cup!
2-7-94 G ran 15m. 28s. his slowest, but was 3rd and won £1.

DiaNe ran one at Pennine Marathon (7-7-91), Martin ran one at Great York Run (29-3-92). DiaNe ran the 10K Great Caledonian Run (Edinburgh). Number 1019 she did 64m. 18s. Certificates and published results, (not unusually), give different figures; 65m 04s. position 2380, 65m 22s. position 2410. For details of Gene's Marathons, Half Marathons, etc...link to come.

The usual finisher's medal has twice meant
more for G. At Norwich all got bronze, except
sub 90m. (gold) and sub 100m. (silver). Silver
was just about within G's reach, if he didn't
hang about! So he stuck his toe right on the
line, shot off at the gun, & made it in 98m. 28s.
his 2nd fastest, (Lincoln was 17s. quicker).
Far R is G finishing Athens Marathon in the
Olympic Stadium and although he appears to
have come 2nd, he was actually 374th. This
run came at the very end of a week's holiday.
DiaNe, Martin and Gene sped straight onto an
aeroplane after the race, G still wearing his medal, which so impressed an air hostess, (perhaps thinking G was 1st), that she reported to the Captain, resulting in an invitation to the flight deck for the family. Very exciting and impressive, but unexpectedly satisfying too when G mentioned Dean Cross. Apparently it's very important to a pilot, (beacon, or something). "You've actually seen it?" enthused Captain Pilot. "Well, yes. We live about a mile from it." Didn't have the heart to shatter his illusion with, "It's just a shed surrounded by sheep!"

Runs based on Holly Lodge (Started in May 1998).

Photos 1 to 4 show unusual variations on the red, white and black theme...a (Lincoln?) green version at Nottingham, (Forest?) yellow in Hants, while the snazzy orange, white and black outfit that went north then south cleverly anticipated the sponsor's number colour choice!
Far right and............ ......botom of page.

Only astronomers have rulers marked off in parsecs and even one parsec's a bit more than you'd want to run.
19.16 million million miles,12 zeros! But titchiness scientists stick prefix 'pico', (pronounced "peek...o"), in front of stuff they want a millionth of a millionth of, so putting pico with parsec wipes off 12 zeros.
Great! 1 picoparsec = 19.16 miles, runable, or what?
Go to Pica, (Go on! If only to check its pronunciation..."pike...a") and you'll be 19.16 miles, (about), from Parsonby, exactly, if you tweek the route a bit, giving.......The Pica to Parsonby Picoparsec.
Crossing A66 isn't the best bit, finishing at a pub is, but an even bester bit awaits. Stop your watch, but not your feet for another ½ mile, (round IJHI on the Alphabet Grid).
Back at same pub, stop your other watch at 19.66 miles....a three quarter marathon.. 2 runs in 1!
G ran it (them) on 26th October 2000.
Pica to Parsonby Picoparsec..189m. 04s. Three Quarter Marathon..194m. 55s.
Left, Horse and Jockey, Parsonby, which, if clicked, goes to where more detail of the route lives.
Question: What's an Imperial 10K?
Straight conversion says 6.21 miles. Nah! Do it G's way; the proper way!
10K = 1 million centimetres. Imperial equivalent 1 million inches = 15.78 miles.
Gene never got round to running this in the place with the right name, a place he's never been to.
Sounds good, though......The Millom Million..................In all Furness somebody should set it up.

Katherine,
Gene and Philip, is a composite of two with G in middle, but with bits of either K, or P clipped off. Not diff to find the join and the only clue G is willing to give is...
it's neither horizontal, nor
diagonal.
