When, in the early '90's, the Wizards of OS retired their triangulation pillars, they, (the pillars), became monuments, as attested by the posh 'don't be naughty' plate, (below), affixed to Binsey's, while they, (the pillars), were offered for adoption. Binsey's stone-wrought erection, (number left), in fine fettle still, though like most, missing crowning brass centre-piece, contrasts fettlewise with Skiddaw's concrete job, (number right), which really is a pity. Reason: Gene requested Skiddaw's as his adoptee. OS rejected Gene's ask (April '94). Doesn't excuse G though; he should still care.... so this isn't the reason it's a pity! (G... You really are a prat(t)! ... Yea! G knows!)
Summit pillars, like these two, oft taken as summit markers, less oft aren't, deliberately and otherwise, whereas non-summit pillars invariably occupy and therefore indicate the very same non-summit.
Claimed by Diane as hers, Binsey is the only hill she has climbed more times than Gene has. To date Diane has made 172 ascents. Binsey, at just over 5 miles. is the nearest 'Wainwright' to Croft Farm. Gene has made 145 ascents. Q. What is the nearest non-English hill to Croft Farm and have D&G climbed it?
It's missing brass centre-piece for a start......so ....go on... call the number...see what happens!

Skiddaw is 9 and a bit miles from Croft Farm, making it the nearest mountain, (meaning 2000ft +), its 3054ft summit being visible from the house. G claims Skiddaw as his, having made 175 ascents to date. Diane has made 36 ascents.

Ans: Scotland's Criffel, 1867ft is about 18½ miles away. D&G's ascent thereof 20-6-1992. Also in Scotland, Burnswark Hill, 942ft, Martin's claimee, slightly under 24¾ miles, Queensberry, 2287ft, a bit over 38¾ miles, the nearest "foreign" 2000-er, and the closest Munro, Ben Lomond, 3192ft, about 111 miles, while the Welsh 3000-er, Foel-fras, 3092ft, is not much further. Snaefell, (IOM), 2037ft, is just under 56¼ miles. Make no mistake! Ben Lomond, despite oft claim contrarywise, ain't visible from the Cumbrian Mountains. Criffel and Queensberry are definitely visible from Croft Farm, along with a host of others.
The best bit about babies is the making thereof and while G was making his in Step 2, D was making 2, (as featured in Step 3), of her own, though not necessarily at exactly the same time. Best part of 2 decades later D&G tried again, (same method, different mixture), and found it's (a) easy, (b) 'tickly' in a very nice way, and (c) erratic, (G said 'erratic'), inasmuch as the result was Martin. Follows (L)......the chronology of transition C2C, Cheshire to Cumbria.

Infant M, like those going before, was put out early to hill and mountain, hating it predictably increasingly up to mid teens, post which reverse trend's expected break-even at age 47 proves it was good for him! No proper prambles for M, though, (unlike P&K), but like them, key to
early stuff is other-
wise the same, i.e.

8-9-90 G&M Helvellyn via Striding Edge.
On this day, at 7 years, M had reached all 8
English 3000 ft summits in 16 days!
G neither! Worse if you’re Damon, wandering backwards,
but forward-roaming nomadism pre D&G in die-3 spits-
-whence-born Britain was rare. Nomadicity increase post
then saw kidlets of D&G Antarctic -bound, getting as far as
Berks and Hants, (Mark and Philip respectively). Point is new
“up” experiences for D&G, such as assorted Downs,
(including Watership) and a 5-year flirtation with Glastonbury
Tor, drum thumpers and all!
North confined rovers, though, settling in Cumbria, D&G
exchanged first year Arlecdon’s Western Fells backdrop for Plumbland’s Northern/North-Western, with southern Scotland thrown in. Far away Wales was walked and G & Son, (one at a time), hunted Munros, (several at a time), but not in Wales.

Some push,but Yorkshire’s Howgill
chunk, (Oh, yes it has), says it’s hill-
-wise a Lakeland county! Fair enough, the Broad Acres aren’t big on lakes;
modest Malham Tarn, Semer Water and Hornsea Mere best W, N and E Riding offers. Titchy Gormire Lake, though, nestling sub North York Moors western escarpment, just what G needed re long walk invention to add to his list…crossing of said moors “parallel” to, but south of Lyke Wake Walk. With North Sea indentation, Wyke, (as in Cloughton, or Hayburn), as terminus, Gormire start spawns…Lake Wyke Walk!
Delightful Blakey Topping and other dinky hills, include a trespass, or two to savour, but Roppa Edge is legit! G had this LWW in yonks-ago-mind…didn’t complete at Cloughton Wyke ‘til Oct 2000.

You'd think so, wouldn't you? In fact you can find both Derwent Water and Derwentwater in his guides. G goes with OS...two words, unless used as an "adjective", e.g. Derwentwater Marina. Of the "waters" only Ullswater, Loweswater (and Hayeswater?) appear to be one word. Hawes Water can be found in either form, probably because it often appears as....
...Haweswater Reservoir.
As in D for J, G for S, as in Pardoe/Robinson Exchange-a-Spouse Scheme, (taken thus by D&G, as family switch by J&S, resulting in effing big aforementioned Crack), began in Step 3 .….responsible for and continuing into current Step 4, which is already longer than the other three combined. Ergo it has run out of space. Ergo it will run into another page. Ergo if it ran back it would be ogre!
But it isn’t, so run forward to……Step 4 and a bit ? ….. No! Call it THUT! Go On! Have a look!
